Waterproof & Oil-Resistant Silicone Resin for Food Packaging

SIO-7893 Waterborne Silicone Emulsion – PFAS-Free Waterproof & Greaseproof Coating Solution for Food Packaging Paper and Molded Pulp.

Food Paper Packaging Needs More Than Good Intentions

The food packaging industry is changing fast. Plastic reduction targets are no longer marketing slogans. They are regulatory realities. Across Europe and North America, PFAS restrictions are tightening. Major food brands are redesigning packaging lines. Paper and molded pulp are replacing plastic trays, wraps, and bowls. But untreated paper absorbs oil. It weakens in steam. It sticks to food. In real-world use, that is unacceptable. Performance still matters. SIOResin SIO-7893 Waterborne Silicone Emulsion was developed to solve this exact problem.

Waterproof and Oil-Resistant Silicone Resin for Food Packaging

Why Silicone Instead of Fluorochemicals?

Fluorochemical coatings rely on fluorinated chains to create oil resistance. They work, but regulatory pressure is increasing. Many brands are actively seeking alternatives. Silicone takes a different approach. Its molecular structure has inherently low surface energy, typically around 20–24 mN/m. That low energy surface resists wetting. Water beads. Oil spreads slowly. Capillary absorption through the paper fibers is significantly reduced. It is not a thick barrier. It is a surface modification at the molecular level. That distinction matters.

What SIO-7893 Silicone Resin Actually Does?

SIO-7893 is a waterborne, non-ionic silicone emulsion engineered for direct food contact paper substrates. After curing with its dedicated catalyst, it forms a thin yet dense silicone network on the surface of paper or molded pulp. That network changes how the surface behaves.

  • Oil does not penetrate easily.
  • Water does not soak in.
  • Steam does not break down the fiber structure.
  • The coating remains extremely thin. It does not feel like plastic lamination. It does not create a rigid film. It simply upgrades the surface performance of the paper itself.

The formulation is PFAS-free and contains no APE surfactants. It complies with major food contact frameworks, including FDA 21 CFR 175.300, 176.170 and 178.3400, as well as relevant BfR requirements. Compliance is built into the system from the raw material stage.

Proven Oil Resistance Under Real Conditions

Laboratory testing reflects real food scenarios, not ideal conditions. In a 90°C sunflower oil immersion test for 30 minutes, paper coated with SIO-7893 showed no visible oil penetration and no fiber softening. The structure remained stable. In the standard 3M Kit test, the coated paper achieved Kit Level 12, the highest rating in the scale. This level is typically required for high-fat food packaging such as fried chicken wraps, burger paper, pastry liners, and French fry containers. These results are not theoretical targets. They are measured outcomes.

Water and Steam Resistance That Protects Structure

Oil resistance alone is not enough. Many packaging failures occur because of water or steam. Silicone’s hydrophobic nature prevents rapid water absorption. When exposed to high-temperature vapor for 15 minutes—simulating self-heating meal packaging—coated substrates maintained structural integrity. No softening. No collapse. No delamination. This is especially critical for molded pulp bowls, takeaway containers, and instant noodle cups. The packaging must survive both heat and moisture at the same time. SIOResin SIO-7893 delivers that stability.

Anti-Stick Performance Improves User Experience

Consumers notice when food sticks to packaging. Cakes tear. Burgers adhere to wrappers. Cream and sauces cling to surfaces. The silicone layer formed by SIO-7893 creates a smooth release surface. Adhesion decreases significantly. Food separates cleanly. The improvement is simple but immediately visible. In baking applications, this translates to easier demolding. In fast food packaging, it means cleaner presentation and better customer perception.

Designed for Industrial Reality

Performance alone is not enough. The coating must run on existing equipment.

SIO-7893 is supplied at approximately 41% solid content, which improves coating efficiency and reduces drying energy compared with low-solid systems. It can be diluted directly with cold water. No heating is required during preparation. The system is compatible with dip coating, spray coating, and roll coating processes. Film thickness can be adjusted by viscosity control and line speed. Production flexibility remains intact. The product must be used with its crosslinking catalyst, H-890. Once cured, a three-dimensional silicone network forms, ensuring long-term durability and heat resistance

Recyclability Matters

Many plastic-laminated papers are difficult to repulp. That creates tension between performance and sustainability. SIO-7893 does not form a thick polyethylene layer. The silicone barrier is extremely thin and allows treated paper substrates to be processed through standard repulping systems. For brands aiming to replace plastic trays or PE-laminated boards with paper-based alternatives, this balance between barrier function and recyclability is essential.

How It Works?

SIO-7893 is a crosslinkable system. It must be used with catalyst H-890.

Typical Formulation

  • SIO-7893: 100 parts
  • H-890: 2–5 parts
  • Water: adjust to target solids

After application and curing, a three-dimensional silicone network forms. The film is thin. Uniform. Pinhole-free. Barrier performance is consistent.

Processing Compatibility

Works with:

  • Dip coating lines
  • Spray systems
  • Roll coaters
  • Molded pulp spray lines

Viscosity can be adjusted. Film thickness can be controlled. Production flexibility remains intact.

Suitable Applications

  • Burger wrapping paper
  • Baking paper
  • Muffin cups
  • Fry boxes
  • Paper bowls
  • Molded pulp takeaway boxes
  • Disposable paper knives and forks

Real Applications Already in Use

In molded pulp self-heating meal containers, SIO-7893 enables paper-based structures to withstand steam generation for up to 15 minutes without leakage or deformation. The inner surface remains intact. Oil does not seep through. The bottom of the bowl stays dry.

In paper cutlery applications, dip-coated forks and knives resist softening in soup or oily foods. Edge penetration decreases. Structural strength improves. The utensil feels more dependable in use.

These are not conceptual possibilities. They are production-level implementations.
